Pope has certainly overlooked this, though in his notes to the Iliad he has acknowledged that to the transla tions of Sandys English poetry owes much Of its beauty. Dryden, too (preface to Fables), calls him the ingenious and learned Sandys, the best versifier of the former age; if I may properly call it by that name, which was the former part of this concluding century. Carew and Waller have ex pressed their Opinions in the commendatory verses prefixed to these Paraphrases. The following ex tract from Richard Baxter's preface to his Poetical Fragments (london, may interest the reader, as the criticism is probably comparatively unknown But I must confess after all that next the Scripture poems, there are none so savoury to me as Mr. George Herbert's and Mr. George San dys's. I know that Cowley and others far exceed Herbert in wit and accurate composure; but (as Seneca takes with me above all his contemporaries, because he Speaketh things by words feelingly and seriously like a man that is past jest, so) Herbert Speaks to God like one that really believeth a God.
