It is a shallow inference--only true in the case of the weak, that a man or a woman's natural confidante is his or her bosom friend or blood relation--rather, the next thing to a stranger will be preferred, if a confidence must needs be given. Cat, with all her cleverness, did not realise this as Bennet might have done. Yet the elder sister, with her rampant sense of justice, recognised that it was in the essence of things that Sam, who had been literally without an associate near his own age and of his own class, should moderate his gruffness to welcome the overtures of the new curate-in-charge, in Mr. Scott's absence. Grudge Sam to another as Cat might and did, and kick violently at the idea of his making this light-hearted young gentleman with the womanish curly hair--(granting that he was neither unbecomingly volatile nor effeminate in his sermons and in the deeds of reform in Olney which illustrated his sermons)--Sam's father confessor, the two young men soon became friends. Little John, who showed a desire to make every man and woman in the town his comrade and fellow worker, enlisted Sam in a project which the curate had much at heart. He it was who started the scheme of getting the farmers in the neighbourhood, when work was slack, to plough the waste land which was no-man's-land, of which there was abundance in the parish.
