This is the first line, the words being transposed, of the celebrated hymn on the resurrection, in the Missal, which was sung at funerals, Dies irae, dies ilia, Solvet saeclum in favilla, &c. Many harsh names in this piece I cannot explain."--Pinkerton. As Maitland's MS. is very illegible, it is no wonder Mr Pinkerton should have been unable to make out many of these harsh name8, and have to omit some lines near the conclusion, which the other MS. fortunately supplies.
