Worn out with toils, with mental anguish stung, I sought a sweet retreat from all my woe; And found it, where the Blackbird plies his song, Retir'd beneath yon wood-crown'd mountain's brow. F The power of retirement in tranquilizing the mind. There, smarting from the wounds misfortune gave. And glad to hail the scenes of peace and rest, I laid me by the fountain's babbling wave, And woo'd sweet Solitude to calm my breast. There too, all as I crav'd her powerful aid, The goddess oft a gracious ear inclin'd; And, or invigorating slumbers shed, Or prompted visions of celestial kind.
