Ellipsis is a label known for choosing insanely diverse lineups for its albums. In something of an ethnomusicologist's dream for its diversity, Planet Squeezebox reprises some 15 traditions of accordion playing throughout the world (one notable omission being Astor Piazzolla or Nestor Marconi's bandoneon tangos). Despite the glaring omission of tango though, the lineup is still incredible. From the predictable forms, such as some zydeco provided by Zydeco Force and Tex-Mex provided by Eva Ybarra, to the nearly frighteningly unexpected, such as Lars Hollmer's Germanic samba lesson using an accordion and Laotian khen (a mouth organ), there's an incredible flow of accordion music represented on the album. There is probably something on the album for almost everyone -- diverse, it can be almost schizophrenic at times, with only the small tie of accordions holding the compilation together. Despite that, the variety is at the same time refreshing. Four continents are represented to the fullest on this instrument (Asia and Australia don't really have any notable accordion traditions to speak of), and the performances are often quite good.
