To see a museum quality model wooden sailing ship is to want one, but they are expensive, so you decide to buy a kit and build one for yourself. Over the past 50 years the quality of kits has improved so much that it is reasonable to expect an experienced modeler to deliver a product that appears scratch built and good enough for a museum. The failure to success ratio is high among folks who aren't aware of the problems involved in the building of a really fine display model of a wooden sailing ships. The hurdle one must achieve is learning how to deal with the various modeling problems each unique model presents. Specifically, the lack of detail and quality instructions provided by the kit manufacturers. Keith Julier has written a series of books, each covering 10 or more different models, no rehashing something already presented. His presentation is different in that each book deals only with the problems he encountered in the process of building the models discussed. He doesn't tell you how to open the kit, and he doesn't repeat the info provided by the kit except to correct it, or offer a solution to the problems he encountered. His books are not an A to Z approach for modeling any one model, but cumulatively it does introduce you to all the typical problems you must overcome. With one or all of these books read, and available for reference, you are better informed to make a buying decision. I personally have all of his books. They are amoung the 700+ I own on the topic, but I find myself re-reading something he has written frequently. These books should be provided with the kits discussed.
