Eight hundred years ago, the Cathars, a group of heretical Christians from all walks of society, high and low, flourished in what is now the Languedoc in Southern France. Their subversive beliefs brought down on them the wrath of Popes and monarchs and provoked a brutal 'Crusade' against them. The final defeat of the Cathars was horrific with mass burnings of men, women and children in the village of Montaillou in the Pyrenees.

"Perfect" in the title refers to what the Cathars called their spiritual leaders. It's also somewhat ironic, I feel, as the heresy -- as defined by the Vatican -- sounds to me closer to what Jesus preached than official Roman Catholic doctrine does.
This history is well written, clear, comprehensible and compelling. I felt well informed and never for a moment bored. For anyone planning a trip to southwest France, it would provide good background reading.
