Seller's Description:
Fair. Dispatched, from the UK, within 48 hours of ordering. The book is perfectly readable and fit for use, although it shows signs of previous ownership. The spine is likely creased and the cover scuffed or slightly torn. Textbooks will typically have an amount of underlining and/or highlighting, as well as notes. If this book is over 5 years old, then please expect the pages to be yellowing or to have age spots. Grubby book may have mild dirt or some staining, mostly on the edges of pages. Aged book. Tanned pages and age spots, however, this will not interfere with reading. Damaged book. Slightly damaged in some way typically, a grazed corner or torn cover.
These are evenly good stories. Thirty-four incomparable ghost tales are enough of the genre for several months of Sundays. Some are short (which may satisfy a quick pick-me-ups,, e.g., "The Beggarwoman of Locarno", by Heinrich von Kleist). On the other hand, The novella "The Entail", by E.T.A. Hoffmann, foretells a tase of the banquet. Others are of varying lengths, something for everyone. More, than half of the writers are known to me as specialists or major dabblers at the noble art! of the short story.
Noble, because people who then wrote for livelihood were enamored of the English language and manifested that love by using WORDS that today we might have to look up in dictionaries, or in antiquarian sources. As well, the range of years for these stories was between late 19th to mid 20th centuries; a time of more leisure in which to write more leisurely.
That is why, to properly enjoy these tales is to read one per session. Ponder it - then take another dip in the pool of ghoul.
The only puzzling component of this anthology is that on the back of the book Elizabeth Bowen is mentioned as one of the authors in between the pages. However, according to the table of contents, she did not submit an entry. What a loss! - her renditions are gems. Ms ;Bowen is one of the masters writing in this form of fiction. Truly.
