When he finally arrives, Jeanette, his uncle's beautiful assistant, and the woman he has waited all year to see, is busy catering to a house filled with Hollywood people. Everyone is celebrating Phillip Kahle's return to producing, after the shocking murder of his girlfriend the year before. Stephen's hoping for some quiet time with his uncle and Jeanette when they make a visit to picturesque Mackinac Island. At first, the Victorian homes and horse drawn carriages provide a much calmer backdrop from the party scene back at the mansion, but as they check into the Peacock Inn, their vacation starts down a very different path. Exploiting his grandfather's fame as a world renowned spiritualist, the brooding Edward Van Dyke has turned an aging Victorian mansion into the new "must stay" spot on the island.
