This is a very readable, yet erudite and thorough study of the Peabody sisters who lived in the early 19th Century Boston area. Their unusual educational upbringing by their strong-willed mother, Eliza Palmer Peabody, led to their taking a foremost place among the leading American thinkers and writers of the time. The writer skillfully weaves Elizabeth, Mary and Sophia's life stories through the many family vicissitudes, giving real character development and understanding to the sisters. I only wished for more detail in their later lives, and what their influence may have been on their children.

Transcendental landscape
This is a leisurely trip through the world of 19th century New England Transcendendalism, through an account of the interlaced lives of three women who were sisters and engergizers of the men in their lives. It's quite a landscape. Their sibling relationship, their remarkable mother and the home from which they never completely extricated themselves, the literary and theological mileu in which they struggled and flourished create a long and detailed work. However, good writing and organization build roads which draw one on. With poverty usually nipping at their heels, they more than managed lives that influenced, created, and supported the complications of their times, while growing in strength and character as individuals.
