Spike Jones & His City Slickers were hugely popular during most of the '40s, recording frequently for RCA Victor, touring often, and also regularly appearing on the radio playing live. This English CD compilation put together by the Harlequin label collects 26 tracks from radio transcriptions, live radio shows, film soundtracks and elsewhere. Even though this is comedy music, the arrangements were very demanding and required top-notch players who also had a sense of humor. While some of these songs were commercially recorded by Jones' band, many of them were not, and these rare transcriptions and broadcasts are a welcome addition to his discography, while the surface noise is rarely a problem. Of course, fans will gravitate to the live takes of favorites like "Der Fuerher's Face" (with two separate takes), "Chlo-e," the hilariousinstrumental trashing of "&"Holiday for Strings" and "Laura." Dinah Shore is featured singing "Dinah" in the one non-Slicker performance, joined by jazzmen Tommy Dorsey on trombone, vibraphonist Lionel Hampton, and pianist Count Basie with Spike Jones providing percussion and a few sound effects. The vintage photographs and detailed liner notes are added bonuses. This is an essential disc for any Spike Jones' fan. ~ Ken Dryden, Rovi
