The one that got away is a collection of short stories, mostly with dual settings: Cape Town and Glasgow, Scotland. Stories cover a range of human relationships as reflected in marriage, friendships, family, relations with servants; the stories also, by implication, comment on how reality is represented in writing and visual art. The dual settings allow for reflection on colonial history, as well as the recent history of the resistance movement. Concerned with interrelatedness, many of the stories are tenuously linked through characters, their repeated appearances or their family relationships. Whilst written in the realist mode, the narration often undermines realism, so that it is not always clear what view the reader should take of a situation. The collection also contains four stories previously published in magazines and anthologies.
