Excerpt from The Official Correspondence of James S. Calhoun: While Indian Agent at Santa F??? and Superintendent of Indian Affairs in New Mexico For many years past the Office of Indian Affairs has been the vic tim of the most untoward circumstances and events imaginable. Its records have been like the people, the repository of whose history and financial status they are, both in the frequency of their removals and in the uncertainty of their occupancy tenure. As a matter of fact, the Indian Office has never really had a place, suited to its needs, that it could call its own, either a whole building or a part of a building. It has always been obliged to accommodate itself to cer tain rooms not needed at the moment by some other bureau and to vacate them the instant they were needed. The wonder is that the Indian Office files are so nearly complete and so well preserved as they are, considering how little concern they have ever caused those highest in authority. The day of their safety is, however, fast draw ing to its close unless something be soon done to arrest the tendencies of these later years.
