Excerpt from The Oeconomy of the Covenants, Between God and Man, Vol. 1 of 3: Comprehending a Complete Body of Divinity H E following celebrated work of the great' witsius, originally wrote in elegant Latin, was firlt publifhed when the author was Profeii'or of Divinity at Franequer. It paired through two editions before the year 169 3, when he republiihed it with ve ry confiderable additions and improvements, and prefixed a dedi cation to King William III. The glorious deliverer of the Britifh nation from all the horrors of popery and Havery, and a pacific addrefs to the Reverend the profeffors of divinity and minifiers of the gofpel in the United Provinces. The book was eagerly read and hmhly valued by all, who hada true tafte for the excellent gofpel -truths it contains and illurrates. A tranflation of it into Englifh was firft publifhed, in three large volumes O???tavo, at London, in 1763 and, though indifibrently executed, yet met with great encouragement. A demand being made for the work in this country, freed from the many grofs typographical blunders and other errors with which the London copy abounded, the Edi tor has been prevailed upon to review the whole tranflation has carefully compared every fentence with the original, corrected ma ny miltakes, fnpplied a variety of omifiions, and endeavoured to give the author's true fenfe. In making the tranllation, the feve ral editions have been confulted, particularly the third, and one printed at Herborn in 1712, four years after the, author's death. And though the Editor dare not fay, the work is free from faults, yet he Hatters himfelf the Public wrll overlook all inaccuracies, and favorably receive a book, homelily intended and plainly calculated for general utility.
