Fans of the European avant-garde scene are familiar with Belgium's Crammed Discs label, but may not know that it has a Brazilian subsidiary called Ziriguiboom. Fans of the European avant-garde scene are familiar with Belgium's Crammed Discs label, but may not know that it has a Brazilian subsidiary called Ziriguiboom. Not surprisingly, the music that Ziriguiboom releases tends to be less chilly and inaccessible than what you often hear from Crammed. Even at its most experimental, the music is almost always built on powerfully rippling grooves and brings to mind beaches and tanning flesh rather than concert halls and tone rows. This various-artists compilation, The Now Sound of Brazil, has been licensed for distribution in the U.S. by Six Degrees, America's finest worldbeat-electronica label, and brings together 12 tracks from the upcoming Ziriguiboom catalog, many of them in remixed form and five of them previously unreleased. Everything here is worth hearing, though one wishes that a few of the remixes packed just a bit more of a rhythmic wallop. Suba's "Segredo" is dark and wonderful, with a percolating groove that skips across the surface of a deep trip-hop undertow; the Raw Deal remix of "Cosa Nostra" by Erlon Chavez is built on a string-bass-and-percussion foundation with a nice big horn section and cheezy synthesizers; Zuco 103 is in typically fine form with "Outro Lado," remixed in a slightly hip-hoppy vein by Charles Webster. Recommended. ~ Rick Anderson, Rovi
