During its years of independent operation (the year covered by this volume, 1849-1871), the 223 mile railroad was North Carolona'slongest road, l; argest business corporation, and leading source of revenue. The road was then leased to the Richmind and Danville where it became a vital link connecting Washington and Atlanta, and still operates today as part of the Norfolk-Southern.

In telling the story of those years, Allen Trelease graphically shows how the coming of the iron horse shattered the isolation of many sections of the state, largely creating the Piedmont Crescent, and thus led to the modernization of North Carolina.
