The discovery and characterization of the NMDA receptor and the continuing elucidation of its role in CNS function has been and exiting development in neuroscience. Knowledge of its role in synaptic transmission and plasticity has led to new understanding not only of integrated behavioral patterns, memory, and learning, but also of the malfunction of these processes in neurological conditions such as epilepsy, spasticity, and stroke. As a result, the neurodegenerative consequences of these conditions, and of those associated with such pathological states as Huntington's Disease and Alzheimer's Disease, may soon become more amenable to treatment or prevention. This book traces the development of the NMDA receptor concept from its historical beginnings through the recent plethora of fundamental discoveries to predictions of new drug therapy based on its increasingly apparent and pervasive role in CNS function.
