This is NOT some boring dry 'tome'. The author builds a sense of drama, and one chapter leads you with anticipation to the next. You have a sense of wanting to know "the rest of the story".

The Supremes
This book is a pleasant read from beginning to end. The writing is first rate. Background information is thorough and makes the "public" story completely accessible. Seeing the author on C-Span is what intrigued and motivated me to buy the book. It was a fine way to spend a weekend.

A satisfying look at the highest court in the land
Jeffrey Toobin provides a fascinating insight - in an extremely readable manner - about the U.S. Supreme Court. That is to say, largely speaking, the last forty years or so of the court. If you are hoping to find out the inner workings of FDR's court, that's probably not going to satisfy you -- but if you are curious on how folks like Scalia, Thomas, Ginsberg and Rehnquist got on the court, and what their lives are like while working there, it's fascinating. (Did you know Clarence Thomas drives around an RV to NASCAR events? I certainly did not.) The Supreme Court is by nature somewhat of a mysterious group of people, and Toobin does a good job of bringing them down a notch without stooping to tell-all, expose levels. This is an intelligent insight and a great primer on the highest court in the land.

History at my fingertips
Mr. Toobin has made what was to me an unexplored part of my education a most readable and comprehensive study of the Court and its occupants. As I am a senior citizen I have lived through all of the cases described and now have a much better understanding of how far reaching the decisions handed down have been. I also have more knowledge of how important the nominations are in the long run. Thank you, Mr. Toobin!
