The Nimrods is an important new book for two reasons. First, it is an accurate true-life story, told by an A-26 navigator/co-pilot who flew 182 combat missions in the Vietnam War, about a magnificent band of A-26 pilots and navigator/co-pilots who flew--from 1966 to 1969--countless high-intensity nighttime dive-bombing missions in "The Secret War in Laos" (Steel Tiger, Barrel Roll and along the Ho Chi Minh Trail). To illustrate the intensity of the dive-bombing missions in the Vietnam War, the writer describes, in detail, ...

To illustrate the intensity of the dive-bombing missions in the Vietnam War, the writer describes, in detail, more than twenty separate unforgettable missions-and more importantly-the personalities and psychological reactions of all of the unforgettable characters who were a part of the 609th Special Operations Squadron. Second, the book is highly relevant to the current Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the Global War on Terror, because it addresses the lessons learned in the Vietnam War (and World War II and the Korean War) and advocates that Americans and their allies apply those lessons learned to terrorism and renewed threats of nuclear war from tyrants and terrorists around the world. This is a book whose time has come. The views of our military veterans and their families who have endured the life-threatening and life-changing experiences of combat are made known to the American public and our allies. Recommendations from The Iraq Study Group Report, and President Bush's new Iraq strategy, are reviewed and analyzed. The book articulates a new way forward and a new vision that can be embraced by the entire world, and contrasts the vision of America and its allies with the vision of Osama bin Laden and the radical Islamic terrorists who threaten the security of the entire world.

While the topic of this book, operating A26s in Laos during the Vietnam War, was fascinating, I found the book very disappointing. First of all, let me say that I am in awe of the courage and dedication of all those, including the author, who served in the conflict, and I have the utmost respect for their service to our country. They deserve our undying admiration and gratitude.
This book, however, suffers from two key shortcomings. One, in common with many self-published books, it desperately needed a good editor. Almost every mission described is a "memorable mission", the date is repeated two or three times, "the propellors bit the air" at least two or three times on almost every page, and so on. It sounds trivial, but it became annoying with every additional repetition. Secondly, it's really two books in one: the first half is devoted to describing over 180 missions in Laos. The second half is a political argument for future conflicts, and it has its' own problems, like equating Iraq and Afghanistan, using bold print in a rather juvenile way to emphasize points, quoting extensively from Air Force Magazine, Time, US News magazine, etc. I enjoy reading those sources too, but they are no substitute for well researched, peer-reviewed literature to make a compelling case.
One conclusion did emerge very vividly from the book however: many brave Americans died under absurd conditions, flying at night through devastating anti-aircraft fire and making multiple attacks in an effort to destroy one enemy truck at a time.
If there is to be a second printing, I would drop the second half, tighten up the first half, and add some more detailed discussion of what it was like to actually fly the A26 aircraft.

The Nimrods
As an aviation history buff, any book involving one of Ed Heineman's fabulous aircraft automatically appeals to me. The B/A-26 Invader, subject of this book, is indeed one of my favorites. Portions of this book involving the authors wartime experiences are well written, and give insight into the "twilight war" undertaken by USAF units based at NKP. This aspect is a great companion to Drury's My Secret War. I was very disappointed by the last half of the book, where Graham leaves the supposed subject of the book, and explains how the current War on Terror should be fought and won. This is not what I bought the book for.
I do not recommend this book for the above reasons. It is somewhat misleading in it's title and advertised subject content.
