Seller's Description:
1968. OUP. Hard Cover. Book-VG. Dj-Good, spine sunned, edgewear. 8.5x5.5. 263pp. 1 b/w illus, 14 b/w plates, 10 maps. Mungo Park first came upon the upper reaches of the Niger in 1796 and his reports of the gold-laden river excited both commercial and scientific interest. Various expeditions set out to trace the route of the river, beginning with the one let by Park in 1805 and ending with the moment when on 18 November 1830, Richard Lander heard at last the sound of surf on the beach. It is a story of great courage and determination.
