At the beginning of the new year, my brother was given an opportunity of serving the Wagner cause in a manner more nearly to his liking. The German Musical Society had offered a prize for the best essay, from ninety to one hundred and twenty pages, on the subject of Wagner's Nibelung drama. My brother was one of the first persons to be approached by Professor Riedel with the request that he act as one of the judges. To this he readily consented, but upon learning of the conditions of the competition decided that the amount of the prize money was far too insignificant, and his successful attempt to "screw this up" to three hundred thalers, is the theme of the following letter addressed to Prof. Riedel: ..". I have had time to consider carefully the various difficulties connected with our undertaking, as I have been confined to bed for several days, and I now hasten to answer your valued letter and submit my views on the subject for your favorable consideration. First of all, let us be very cautious and critical in the choice of the third member of the adjudicating committee.... If you will be good enough to listen to a suggestion from me on this point, my advice would be to appoint Herr Hans von Biilow, of whose unconditionally sound judgment and critical severity I entertain the highest possible opinion.
