Not only is the volume of new research and writing growing rapidly but modern institutional economics now has wide recognition as a distinct area of study. In light of these developments there is reason to take stock of the present position of the "new institutional economics," consider some of its major accomplishments, and offer ideas for future directions of study. The present volume attempts to provide such insights into current institutionalist thinking by drawing together articles from the Journal of Institutional and Theoretical Economics that show how orthodox economic theory is being modified by the new approach.
