Of these men there were in the galleries several portraits painted by Trum bull. There was John Adams, a short, ruddy, choleric little man, with the free bearing of an English yeoman, ready, perhaps over-ready, to defend his curtilage and cowyard, his plowed fields and fallow, against taxgath erers, Cavalier squire, or even the lord of the manor; an honest, healthy man, untroubled by any doubts as to possible encroachment by his boundary lines. Near him hung Alexan der Hamilton, of more aristocratic type, open, generous, high-spirited, a sort of dashing gal lant, yet Of steadfast serenity; his mind rest ing solidly on reason and principles, an ardent English gentleman.
