Here, Andrew Bacevich warns of a dangerous dual obsession that has taken hold of Americans: conservatives, and liberals alike--the marriage of unprecedented military might to a blind faith in the universality of American values. This mindset, Bacevich argues, will leave the United States increasingly isolated, morally and economically bankrupt, and in abject failure. This provocative book, now with a new Afterword discussing the recent U.S. policy of "preventive war," examines the origins and implications of this misguided enterprise. It urges us to restore a sense of realism and proportion to U.S. policy, bringing American purposes and American methods--especially with regard to the role of the military--back into harmony with the nation's founding ideals.

I view this book as a companion piece to Bacevich's Limits of Power. The New American Militarism is a scathingly honest appraisal of America's use of military power. The book begins with the Vietnam war and continues to our present day involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan. Bacevich offers a balanced and non partisan assessment of the underlying assumptions that have led America into a state of constant warfare. He provides a detailed history of the rise of neoconservatives and their influence on our present day military policy. This is an important book that should be read by all Americans whatever their political ideology.
