This would not be remarkable in a world which is as yet unconvinced that the Christian faith is true. What is peculiar is that the attempt should be made within Christian circles, and with the avowed purpose of saving Christianity. Such an attempt is naturally met with the cry of treachery, and is traced to radical unbelief or wanton irresponsibility. But the situation cannot be met by such accusations, the movement is too serious to be turned by a mere reiteration of orthodoxy, and many of its exponents cannot be dismissed as wanting in sincerity, concern for true religion, or theological capacity.
