Raised stamp of "The Ladies Social Library of Blue Hill, Maine" on title page (only library marking). Inscribed and signed by the author to A. L. Gray "in memory of the Census of 1920." Illustrated with 25 full-page black and white photographs. The author discusses the training environment for the Naval Reserve, which was established in 1915, initially composed of retired sailors who had left the service with an honorable discharge. As World War I loomed on the horizon, a swift reorganization of 1916 allowed the enrollment of citizens without prior service, including women.
