The Origin of Gesture
A really interesting book, and actually as far as I know the origin of the concept of gesture drawing (or its fullest articulation), which is so important and fundamental. On the downside the book is very programmatic and I'm not sure who would have the patience and stamina to work through it step by step, but if you pick out the best bits there are definite diamonds in there.

Legacy Instruction
Nicholaides' wife, students and editors compiled this book after his death in 1938. Part of my intent in obtaining this book was to get a glimpse into the early decades of the 20th century in which he flourished. Before technology gave us computer aids, there was the artist and his/her vision and the medium. This book is written in clear language and assumes access to simple tools that should be available to most. Given the insights which recent advances in neuroscience have given us, it is apparent that Kimon Nicholaides was intuitively aware of mechanisms of perception that scientists have only recently proven. In plain English, he was an excellent instructor. The drawings were selected from his and from students' drawings. This gives the beginner an understanding of what to expect of herself.
