Into a definition of beauty the Hebrew prophets could not, it was felt, appropriately enter, and the verdict of the senses was unregenerately preferred to any prin ciples derived from theirs. And indeed to find in the choice of a moulding or the carving of a grotesque a proof of a state's exaltation or of its pitiable abasement is a con venient theme for eloquence, but carries too seldom the conviction it invites.
