Although exhaustively, if not obsessively researched, the overall conclusions of the author are extreme and in my opinion, unfairly critical.
With an almost conspiratorial tone, the book is far too easily perceived as being highly prejudicial toward virtually all high-ranking allied military personnel, (with the exception of the United States) and is seemingly an indirect, thinly veiled condemnation of well-intended military forces. To a slightly lesser extent, the book echoes a perpetual mistrust of Government in general, as well.
Without question, World War One was unbridled carnage and wholesale slaughter the world had never before seen. However, not every Commander, not every General, not every Officer and not every Politician was completely inept, woefully incompetent, callous and completely oblivious toward the consequences of their actions.
At its' best, the book does-indeed shed light on routinely manipulated and misleading, (if not outright fraudulent) casualty rates that were reported. Additionally, the author successfully questions the validity of many battles deemed as allied victories and/or German defeats.
The real myth of "The Myth Of The Great War" is the myth of this book being a revised historical perspective of the catastrophic events. It is not.
More translucent, than transparent, the author's personal opinions and personal prejudices are seemingly evident. Although presumably well-reasoned, the author's perspectives sometimes blur the line between what is a fact and what is an opinion, with the conclusions being a combination of both history and subjective, personal commentary.
