This is a superb set of essays on Plato's writing. While much of the book is, appropriately, focused on the Republic, Ms. Brann also discusses several other dialogues, including the Phaedo, the Apology, Charmides, the Timaeus, and the Sophist. She concludes with an extraordinary essay on "Teaching Plato" to Undergraduates -- teaching Plato in quotation marks because she begins by inveighing against the notion of "teaching Plato."
Any reader interested in a better understanding of Plato's writing should read this book several times.
