The material on this best-of is culled almost entirely from Muir's trio work with Gordon Bok and Ed Trickett; the songs selected are those on which she either sings solo or is the most prominently featured voice. Some of these are among the most beautiful performances in the Bok-Muir-Trickett catalog: the aching "Snow Gull," the gently bitter "The Ways of Man" (from Bok-Muir-Trickett's second-best album, not yet reissued on CD), and the deeply moving "Isle au Haut Lullabye." As always with this group, the seafaring dead are always close at hand, and many of these songs come from the perspective of widows and mourning lovers, but an equal number are expressions of deep hope and comfort. A few ("Tails and Trotters," "Little Dan") are lighthearted fun. The one song not taken from the Bok-Muir-Trickett catalog is a charming collaboration between Muir and her daughter's group Hot Soup, titled "Two Fine Friends." Throughout the program, Muir's sweet and unaffected singing is a consistent joy. Highly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson, Rovi
