Not illustrated. 1892 Excerpt: ...take a like turn between the mounts Safa and Marwa; and halt at Mount Arafat where they slay the victims (of the sacrifice), and shave their heads in the valley of Mina; but before entering Mecca, and on their near approach to it, they put on the ehramf or sacred habit, which consists of two wrappers--one about their middle and the other thrown over their shoulders, leaving their heads bare. They wear slippers for covering and protecting their feet against the toilsome dry sand. In the course of the use of this sacred apparel, exclusively appropriated and reserved for the auspicious moment alone, they avoid hunting and shooting; and this precept they keep and observe so punctually and rigidly that they, during the ceremony, do not kill even any vermin. But some noxious animals, as kites, ravens, scorpions, mice, and pariah dogs, they are allowed to destroy and kill for the safety and preservation of their lives against certain impending unavoidable dangers which, if neglected, might be attended by lamentable results. During the pilgrimage the pilgrims become so purely religious in every respect that they constantly and strictly guard their actions and words, and totally refrain from all quarrelling, or ill-language, and all converse with women, and indecent, obscene discourse. They chiefly give their intention and mind to the good work they have undertaken, labouring, as they do, under the impression that any shortcoming in the discharge of the ceremonial will deprive them of all the fruit of their earnest toil, the subject of their trip to the holy place.
