The-arabs, {till refiding at Mecca, Abd'a'lmfilec would not permit his fubjefts to vifit the temple of that city 5 and, for that reafon, ordered the temple at Jerufalem to be fo enlarged as to take the hone, or rather the iteps, on which Omar had formerly prayed, and on which the Moflems had before ere???ted a mofque, into the body of the church. The whole being, therefore, thus in a manner converted into a mofque, the Syrians, performed their pilgrimage thither, as the Arabs under Abd'allah's jurifdit'tion {till vilited the Caaba. Abd'almfilec alfo defired thechriftians' of Damafcus to deliver into his hands one of their churches adjoining to the cathedral in that city. Upon which, they {hewed him the inftrument drawn up and {igned by Kha led Ebn Al Walid, when the city was taken in the khali fat of Omar; by which the poifeliion of that and the other Chriltian churches was for ever fecured to. Them. Abd'almfilec then offered them a large fum of money, and gave them leave to build another church in lieu of it, in any other part of the town but as they could not be pre vailed upon to part with it willingly, he left it in their polfeflion not judging it proper or expedient at this junc ture, when he had a powerful enemy to contend with, to take it from them byforee.
