Magical, tantalizing, and sensual, "The Mistress of Spices" tells the story of Tilo, a young woman born in another time in a faraway place who is trained in the ancient art of spices. When Tilo--disguised in the gnarled body of an old woman--travels to present-day Oakland, California, an unexpected romance with a handsome stranger forces her to choose between the supernatural life of an immortal and the vicissitudes of modern life.

Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is one of the best writers I have ever encountered. Mistress of Spices is the first novel of hers I read, and I was delighted to discover that she has written many others. Chapters in the book are named for different spices, and through each chapter, the main character discovers the unique voices of each spice, and learns of their hidden powers. This author writes the kind of book that is very difficult to put down. Her prose is beautifully rich and colorful; her ability to entrance an audience with her storytelling is tremendous. Themes found within many of her books include: Indian culture, struggles with disparate cultures & identities, family traditions, dynamics & bonds, and journeys of self-discovery. Her novels are cathartic and full of adventure. You'll be glad to discover this author, and her many other novels.
