Good. Stated first American edition, with same date on title and copyright pages; no additional printings listed. Original brown cloth, vii + 519 pp + 24 pp publisher's catalogue, with a nice drawing there of the interior of what is presumably Appleton's bookstore. Some soil and scuffing on cloth, backstrip gone from spine, corners bumped with a bit of cardboard exposed there. Internally, old bookseller's label, previous owner's signature on paste-down front endpaper and title page, some foxing on first and last few leaves and sporadically in-text, tanning and some light tan stains and free rear endpapers, additional tanning on one page of the catalogue, neat underlining, checkmarks and marginaia on a dozen or so page of one essay (in pencil), an approximately 1x2 inch water(? ) stain on upper corner of last leaves of the catalogue which gradually disappears and is gone completely after 25 or so leaves in-text, otherwise tight, clean, paper crisp, unmarked, probably skimmed, but never really read beyond the one essay. Topics include the Bible, the Roman Catholic claims, Church history, politics, early Christian writers, education, Rugby School, etc. Religion; theology; history; Bible studies.
