Above, the trees, bright with the evening sun, were crowded with chattering monkeys and gaily plutnaged birds, and further down the stream could be seen a thatch-roofed village, embedded in bananas and towered over by stately cocoa nut palms. All seemed so peaceful and happy that I forgot my rod and line, and sat down on an old stump to survey the scene. However, on discovering a poisonous snake and family of scorpions in my immediate vicinity, it occurred to me that night was coming on, and a move homewards might be advisable. I fished slowly down the stream till near the campong, (i.e. village), and then, just when I had arrived at the best pool, in the water stood a dusky Diana. I remembered the fate of Actaeon, and fled. The sun had now gone down, and as I sauntered homewards along the old road, overgrown with high grass, I could at leisure admire the gold and purple turrets in the western sky, and keep a sharp look out for tigers at the same time. On reaching home, I had the satisfaction of finding that 'Will had come back empty-handed, and he explained apologetically, "You see, I always made it a rule to pelt that nabbo when I saw it, so I suppose its now gone to a better land." Then the milk of a cocoa-nut, with perhaps just a suspicion of cognac in it as a safeguard against malaria, dinner, cigar, and bed, and our "hari besar" was over for another fortnight. T. C. B.
