Excerpt from The Mercer's Company Lectures on the Fluids of the Body The first seven of the Lectures contained in this volume are based ou-two courses of Lectures which I delivered at University College, London, in the summer of 1907, and in New York during January, 1908, at the Bellevue Hospital and Medical School, under the foundation of Dr. C. A. Herter. The eighth Lecture represents one of the Arris and Gale Lectures delivered in 1896 before the Royal College of Surgeons with certain additions and alterations necessitated by recent work on the subject. I have thought it advisable to add this last chapter in order that those, whose interests lie chiefly in the practical treatment of disease, may appreciate how closely our control of morbid processes is bound up with the advance of the purely physiological knowledge which forms the theme of the first seven Lectures. I have made no attempt to give an exhaustive account of any of the subjects treated in the Lectures, believing that a presentation from the standpoint of one worker is more likely to excite interest, whether of sympathy or dissent. In this way my readers may be stimulated to search out for them selves, in the wards or in the laboratory, the answers to some of the riddles with which they are here confronted.
