Performing for the first time before motion picture cameras, one of the greatest movie actors of all time produced an inspired and inspiring portrait of a wounded war veteran battling the twin tortures of crippling injuries and post-traumatic stress, in the days long before PTSD became a household term. It never fails to amaze me that few, if any, of the people to whom I have recommended this movie over the years had even heard of it, before I mentioned it to them. This should be required viewing in high schools and for all new military recruits.
