He would see that the waters of both these great chains converge towards a common point--the Isonzo, the Livenza, and the Tagliamento, descending from the Julian Alps; the Piave, the Musone, the Brenta, and the Adige, fed by the snows of the Tyrol; and, finally, the Po, largest of all the Italian rivers, --these pour their tribute into the Adriatic Gulf at its western angle, rolling with them the alluvial deposits gathered up during their rapid course. On debouching in the sea their waters grow shallow, and divide into innumerable arms, which combine to form the deltas and marshes of the Venetian coast. This extent of insulated plains is known as the Lido, or "the shore;" and it lies between the lagoon and the open sea like a natural dyke or rampart, against which the stormy Adriatic hurls its waters in vain. It is upwards of thirty miles in length, but seldom more than half a mile in breadth. The maritime littoral thus created by the combined action of the sea and the rivers is in great part defended by ranges of dunes, or sand-hills; while at exposed points it is also protected by artificial works, --such as the famous murazzi, or sea-walls, in the island of Pelestrina...
