Excerpt from The Mean Right Ascensions and Proper Motions of 254 Stars: A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Pennsylvania The object of the present discussion is primarily the derivation from all available data of definitive values of the Right Ascensions and Proper Motions of 254 stars. These stars constitute the star list used by Professor C. L. Doolittle in the investigation of the variation of latitude at the Sayre Observatory of Lehigh University in the years 1876 to 1893 inclusive. For use in the final discussion of these observations the Declinations have been investigated by Professor Doolittle. It is hoped that the results of the latter discussion may prove valuable in lines of investigation other than that for which it has been executed. With this end in view, the Right Ascensions have here been reduced according to the same method, and it is hoped with the same care and thoroughness, as in the case of the Declinations. For the sake of completeness, and with the permission of Professor Doolittle, the Declination data and results are given with those of the Right Ascensions.
