Justin O'Brien is a godawful translator; as hard as Proust can be to understand (even to patient, dogged readers), O'Brien makes Proust HARDER to understand. And O'Brien's prose too often pokes the reader in the eye--when it does not (also often) enmesh the reader in barbed-wire.
