This is a spellbinding tale woven of equal parts epic and myth--with a liberal dash of hard science fiction. When a one-way time tunnel to Earth's distant past, specifically six million BC, was discovered by folks on the Galactic Milieu, every misfit for light-years around hurried to pass through it. Each sought his own brand of happiness. But none could have guessed what awaited them. Not even in a million years. In the early twenty-second century, many humans are being born with psychic powers and are linked in a single galactic mind. Those without these psychic powers--the misfits, undesirables, criminals, and radicals--have a choice: mental reprogramming or exile. Exile, voluntary or otherwise, takes them back six million years, to a time between the extinction of dinosaurs and the rise of Homo sapiens, and to a time of exotic surprises and unknown dangers.

If you like Fantasy, this book is fantastic. This is one fantasy book without overused magic everywhere; instead fun stuff like time travel, telekinesis, and other galactic civilizations are the mainstay. Interesting characters, original plot, great writing, historical background. I first read it when it came out in the 80's and liked it enough to be on standby for the next 3 installments. When I reread it this time, my already high expectations were hard to meet because my recollection included the entire series not just the first book. Later in the series a heavier tint of sci-fi increases to make it even better, which is what I seem to recall making the story really terrific. Book 4 is worth all the reading and the journey to get there is most entertaining. Having said that, this Book 1 of the series is a very good start.
