What is prophecy? A vision of future events, or a message from beyond? Throughout human history, men and women have stepped forward claiming to be prophets. What is prophecy? A vision of future events, or a message from beyond? Throughout human history, men and women have stepped forward claiming to be prophets. They claim knowledge of the future and sometimes knowledge of the will of their god. Even if we believe such people to be frauds or lunatics, it cannot be denied that they have shaped our history in a way that no political leader or conquering warlord could ever claim. In this historical study, Damon Wilson explores the two key strands of prophecy in history - the seer of the future and living voice of a god. The book considers the ancient tradition of the pagan oracles, who believed their visions of future events came as gifts from the gods. It then follows the trail of historical development through the growth of the Judaic, Christian and Moslem concepts of the Prophet of God, highlighting many historical facts that are rarely considered or are even suppressed by the modern leaders of these faiths. The book then considers the seers of the future: Nostradamus, the greatest seer in history; the Brahan Seer, Scotland's Nostradamus; Old Mother Shipton, the Yorkshire visionary; Edgar Cayce - the sleeping prophet; Wolf Messing - Stalin's seer; and Jeane Dixon - the oracle of the White House. The book includes the role of prophecy in famous incidents such as the sinking of the SS "Titanic" and The Silver Bridge collapse and its connection with the mysterious Mothman Prophecies of West Virginia.
