Excerpt from The Making of Europe: A Geographic Treatment of the Historical Development of Europe During recent years it has become recognised that the broad lines of European history should be taught in conjunction with British history. Experience, however, has shown the difficulty with which pupils are confronted upon their first acquaintance with the subject. Generally, too, it has not been found practicable to carry the study beyond 1870, although the interpretation of the modern world demands it. This book, the outcome of considerable class experience, endeavours to meet these difficulties by treating mainly those historical features having direct bearing on the development of modern Europe, by emphasising the geographic influences which have been a factor in the same development and by the continuous use of special maps. It has thus been possible to deal with the story prior to I 789 in comparative outline, the main portion of the volume being reserved for the history of the nineteenth century, particularly for that economic development which has characterised the last fifty years, making the history of Europe the history of the world. The recent Great War and its historical causes have their place in the scheme and are treated in the final chapter, while an attempt is also made to review in the light of the past the terms of the Peace Settlements and the League of Nations.
