Should the home hole be halved, the match would be halved. Miss Purington was much excited over this. But Ames was cruelly unmoved, and to her intense scorn even inquired what was the score. "Mr. Ames, we must get this next hole," she said, firmly. " Certainly," responded Ames, politely, perfectly willing to agree in any case. He was weary--exceedingly weary of it all. What cared he concerning the outcome? In the one event Dora would walk home in the dusk with the offensive, though harmless, Tilden. In the other, he himself would walk home with the golf-mad, unsentimental Miss Purington. So he apathetically swung his clubs, and only wished that the agony was over. Such an extremely un-golfy young man was this Ames, who also was in love. Now for his side Tilden made the green in five, and Miss Sibley, by a nicely executed, if unwarrantable, putt laid the ball within three inches of the hole. Ames, sad to relate, towards the last had become so brutally uninterested that for his side he had sliced the ball far into the rough, ramming it into an ugly hazard and requiring five to get out. Miss Purington was furious--absolutely furious. " For mercy sake, do wake up, Mr. Ames! " she exclaimed, when it was his turn, and Miss Sibley in the near distance was gleefully prancing around on account of her good putt. " If you'll only make the green this shot we may halve the hole in seven. They'll surely hole out in seven, you see. Now take your time. Here--stick your right foot forward...
