The history of San Francisco is not the typical as San Francisco is not now and hasn't been typical in any way. As a native San Franciscan, I was lucky enough to inherit my mom's copy of The Barbary Coast, by Herbert Asbury (which I also recommend). Madams of San Francisco goes into a lot more detail about this aspect of San Francisco history. What was hushed up in other places was mainstream and accepted in San Francisco. One of the chapters I found particularly interesting in this book was about the Ingot lottery in France. The French government in the 1850's had a lottery and the winners were given passage to San Francisco. In reality, the winners were almost entirely criminals, dissidents and prostitutes. This book offers a fascinating look into San Francisco history and how many of these early "pioneers" shaped the course of the Bay Area.
