Seller's Description:
None. Very Good Indeed in Good jacket. The first three volumes (of six) of the famous correspondence between the two literary Englishmen. Covering letters from the period 1955 to 1958. Edited and introduced by Rupert Hart-Davis. Title pages of volumes two and three suggest they are first editions, although prices on dustwrappers indicate the jackets at least are slightly later editions or reprints. Volume one is 1983 reprint. Including the following additional material: Volume one: letter to "Edward" from the author Artemis Cooper (aka The Hon. Alice Beevor) affixed to front pastedown; bookplate of Sybil Hart-Davis (mother of Rupert) to front free-endpaper; to rear pastedown, letter from Rupert Hart-Davis to the previous owner in response to his enquiry regarding the aforementioned bookplate. Volume two: letter from Rupert Hart-Davis' son Duff in response to previous owner's request for further information affixed to rear pastedown. Volume three: newspaper clipping of sketch of Pamela Adeane, wife of George Lyttelton, adhered to rear pastedown. George Lyttelton was a classics and literature master at Eton, where he taught Rupert Hart-Davis. 25 years after the latter left Eton the men began a weekly correspondence, which they maintained until Lyttelton's death in 1968. Rupert Hart-Davis was an editor, publisher and author, described by 'The Times' as "the king of editors". Following the death of Lyttelton, Hart-Davis began editing their cache of letters and published the first volume in 1978. This first book was very favourably received, leading to the publication of five further collections of what literary critic Kenneth Rose described as "one of the most urbane, civilised and entertaining correspondences of our time". Peppered with literary allusions, gossip from the contemporary London publishing scene, reminiscences of Eton and excellent jokes, these exchanges display their authors' singular flair for the art of letter writing. In cloth bindings with dustwrappers. Externally very smart, with just very minor shelfwear and the occasional small mark to boards. Wear to dustwrappers, with small closed tears, slight chipping and loss to head and tail of spines. Internally, firmly bound, bright and clean save for the odd pencil annotation and handling mark. Very slight loss to page 101 of volume three. Previous owner's stamp to front pastedown of all volumes. Very Good Indeed.
