"Where has he gone?" "WHAT? How can you ask that?"
Warmest of welcomes to my first review of a Jane Asher novel--which happens to be the second one I read. I ordered it and THE QUESTION at the same time; THE QUESTION arrived first--and had more wear to it. I've been LONGING to share my thoughts, but I had to find just the right words...and I'm still searching.
First: I don't know if there is more than one Jane Asher currently residing in this universe, but, yes indeed, this is the same flame-haired stage and screen actress ("Sandra" of last year's DEATH AT A FUNERAL; "Annie" of the original, Michael-Caine ALFIE; "Francesca" in Vincent Price's MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH; "Felicity Troy" of "The Choir," which you may have seen on PBS in 1995 or thereafter; and, yes, "Mrs. Liddell" in DREAMCHILD after giving voice to Alice in Wonderland for a recording when she was closer to the age of the beloved heroine) and the author of how-to books on entertaining, party cakes, and children's costumes. So she has had considerable experience in taking on roles and becoming characters. What better extension of such talent than creating her own characters and bringing them to just-as-vivid life as any she has portrayed?
In THE LONGING, she introduces Juliet and Michael Evans, a comfortably middle-class British couple who encounter problems with starting their family. If you've ever read Caroline B. Cooney's TWENTY PAGEANTS later, you might be reminded of it during Juliet's conference with her doctor....The doctor sends her to Professor Hewlett, an IVF specialist (no mention of a partner surnamed Packard), and Juliet puts her hopes, and -self, in his hands. Could there possibly be danger of an unethical by-product when a woman has such a strong LONGING and the one who can help her isn't exactly a dried-up old undesirable?
Even if you think you know the answer to that, even if you think you could predict the beginning, middle, ends, and twists, you must experience this book! It isn't even laid out in as straightforward a way as all that--and the way it is laid out is absolutely perfect for this tale, especially when the crucial ingredient of tingling suspense is most definitely not left out. I haven't even mentioned 2 crucial characters, whom you'll actually meet BEFORE the ones I've named (starting at Chapter One, I mean. The Prologue introduces Michael--well, peep-shows him in a moment he'd sooner keep private!). Who are they and why do I call them crucial? Why are they the first ones you'll meet? Might you like them more than you like Michael and Juliet and wonder how things turn out for them?
Ms. Asher (aka Mrs. Gerald Scarfe) did her research on IVF for this tale, and turned her notes into vivid descriptions, not just of the processes but the emotions of the participants. She graciously acknowledges those who helped with this research--not just doctors and other specialists, but regular "Juliet"s willing to share their experiences and feelings.
My experience and feeling: There was a time when I never would have believed that I would be here now, reviewing a book by Jane Asher and being glad to be putting that former time further and further (farther and farther? neither really sounds right) into the past with every word of this review.
Order from alibris.com or elsewhere, but if you're longing for a good story that's cleverly and feelingly told, don't miss THE LONGING by Jane Asher.
