great photos
Bought the book for inspiration from the photos of master carver's work. Wasn't disappointed by the photos, just wish there had been more. Historical info is great but, except for research on a narrow subject, useless to me...

thorough and revisionist at the same time
Baxandall's treatment of these emerging artists of the Northern Renaissance is the definitive work on the subject. This book encompasses making, sociohistorical contexts (with great economic detail), and outlines of the major work of the sculptors involved. But the chapters on identity formation and the period eye further help readers understand the role of these artists within a broader historical framework. This important, clearly written, and thorough study is crucial to any art historian of the Renaissance.
