"The Life of a Geisha" illustrates the fascinating world of Japan's powerful and seductive geishas, a fading yet beautiful world that has captured the imaginations of millions of readers of Arthur golden's Memoirs of a Geisha. This striking book contains full-color woodblock prints made during Japan's famous Edo Period, historic and contemporary photographs of geisha life, and images of the "floating world" Japan's mysterious artistic subculture. The accompanying text includes evocative Japanese poems and haikus. All celebrate the beauty and creativity of the geisha, who with her exquisitely detailed costume, elaborate make-up and hairstyle, and artfully ritualized behavior, chastely beguiles and entertains Japan's most powerful men.

The layout and pictures in this book are beautiful and informational. The content is a little lacking, especially if you have read any of Liza Dalby's books or Memoirs of a Geisha, both of which are referenced constantly throughout. The captions are a little trite sometimes. The historical ones are interesting, but some of the modern ones make comments that are really obvious.
A great coffee table book for the pictures, but not insightful for anyone already familiar with Geisha culture.
